Humanizing aquaculture development: Putting social and human concerns at the center of future aquaculture development

Compared with other aquaculture issues, attention to human and social dimensions is lagging behind. Sectoral development, policy, programmatic factors have created inequities sub-optimal outcomes, which are jeopardizing the broader contribution sector could make well-being. Human rights in at core of this article, argues that as a major economic food producing sector, needs be about development. The article reviews: application aquaculture, related right decent work; notions justice equity including idea Blue Justice its relevance aquaculture; ethics license operate challenges business public acceptance pose sector. It also reviews how these issues affect people: women, along slow progress gender equality sector; youth their engagement while noting ‘youth’ does not equate “jobs” requires lifting many more societal hurdles for full participation indigenous people local ecological knowledge—a precious asset future well survival enhancement cultural value disabilities minorities who yet become fully visible accounted Redressing placing center development fundamental change from usual. To humanize renewed relationship proposed, founded on recognizing substantive agency, embracing intersectionality, is, multiple identity interaction, valuing cross-disciplinary knowledge systems. would implemented through new, inclusive, models, provisioning approaches, procedural governance mechanisms overcoming inequalities.
